DESIGN COMPETITION // SDBI.DE FASHION 2016 - EUROPEAN FASHION AWARD

CHANGE

Are we on the eve of a new era? Wars, conflicts and catastrophes are not the only issues that change the way we view our world. There is no question: Digitalisation and globalisation enhance and facilitate our life, yet they also have a fundamental impact on the world. Smartphones make every networking attempt of the past look like a simple prelude. The start-up culture, shareconomy, co-creation, crowdsourcing and swapping, as well as the disruptive business models of international investors have created a completely new kind of economy. Hardly any industry remains unaffected by this change, whether it is the media, infrastructure, hotel business, work processes, shopping and last, but not least, fashion.

There was no fashion industry in the early 1980s, yet each season a new, and often radical, fashion statement appeared on the scene. Today there is a lack of variety in the stores, despite an oversaturation of designers, concepts and brands on the market. Promising young designers seem to appear and die out like shooting stars. Has commerce choked creativity?

At the same time, the on-screen “wow” effect and the distinction thus generated in social networks seems to have become more important than the effect of the fashion on the body. Thanks to the plethora of new communication channels, the power of bloggers and street style photographers large labels are losing significance. The consumer’s appreciation is waning: apparel costs as much as a cup of coffee, and some consumers wear clothes for only half the amount of time spent to make them.

Yet fondness for mass-produced apparel is considered bad taste. Even the shopping mall full of chain stores promotes: “This isn’t mainstream. This is street style.”

The European Fashion Award FASH 2016 with the subject “Change” is searching for visions of a new era. How can fashion react to all these changes? Should there be more adaptation, subversive strategies, or should we dream completely new dreams? Who will ride the wave of change and claim the future?

DESIGN COMPETITION // FRONT ROW SOCIETY - MIX AND MATCH: MOSAIC MANIA

CREATIVE BRIEF

Submission Deadline: 15 July, 2015, 6pm CET
Voting Starts: 16 July, 2015, 6pm CET

Continuing the “Mix and Match” theme from our previous design challenge, for our latest competition we want you to focus on a different type of assembly: mosaics. If patchworks are the yin of the collage world, with their eclectic mixes of patterns and prints, then mosaics are definitely the yang: their solidly geometric appeal relying more on the careful combination of colors and shapes rather than a multitude of elaborate motifs.

The components may be less complex, but we’re definitely not saying that mosaics can’t produce some pretty spectacular results by themselves. Think of the stunningly ornamented floors of old churches, or the exquisite tiled decorations found in Moroccan hammam or Turkish bath houses. Take a wander through the Greek and Roman villas of your imagination, and show us what you can piece together.

What can you win?

Each winner receives a one-off prize of 200€ once the collection launches on the website plus a sample of their products when it arrives in stock. But that is not all – if your design receives 500 orders on wholesale, you will receive an additional €200. This means that FRS can continue to embody the spirit of fashion democracy, rewarding our top designs again...and again...and again! We will also conduct an interview with the winner, publicizing their design across the fashion community in Berlin and worldwide.

You are designing for…
  • A dynamic, contemporary woman aged 25-40 with a sophisticated appreciation of style and modern Chinese aesthetics.
  • She enjoys considered and conscious luxury, where focus is given to quality, tailoring and craftsmanship.
  • She is conscientious about wastefulness in modern living and wishes to be clothed in ways that reflect her style as much as her sentiments about sustainability.
Your sustainable designs must…
  • Cut waste out of fashion by using one or more of the sustainable design techniques of zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction.
  • Take the deeper cut by using textile waste for the up-cycling and reconstruction outfits.
  • Show wider opportunities through being reproducible and scalable.
If you want to redress women in style and sustainability, you must…
  • Design to win. Create three ready-to-wear outfit sketches (not complete outfits) for the open application. If you make the cut to become one of the ten finalists, you must make these three ready-to-wear sketches into complete outfits. To test you further, you must then create two additional complete ready-to-wear outfits and one couture outfit in order to make your mark on the runway.
  • Impress the judges. Your designs will be scored in three categories based on the creative design brief (in the open application and semi-final) and four categories (in the Grand Final) each with equal weighting according to creativity and originality, sustainability, marketability and workmanship (final only).

DESIGN COMPETITION // FRONT ROW SOCIETY - PATCHWORK

CREATIVE BRIEF

Submission Deadline: 15 June, 2015, 6pm CET
Voting Starts: 16 June, 2015, 6pm CET

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, which might be why as experts in perfectly produced digital prints, we tend to lust after artisanal, handcrafted pieces, where each individual flaw or variation only adds to the object’s unique charm. That’s why we’ve chosen to focus our latest challenge on one of the ultimate expressions of homespun craftsmanship: patchwork.

No longer just a practical means of using up scraps of old fabric, we want you to celebrate the fantastic variety of patterns and prints patchworking can offer up. Imagine the cosy bohemian atmosphere created by old quilted blankets and throws, as paisleys and florals collide in a delightfully eclectic assembly; or the excitement of going through a treasure trove of vintage prints as you browse through old fabric swatches. It’s time to pick up your sewing needle and show us what you can patch together.
