Lasting Trend
Like most girls, I'm excited for the new season trends. Just as fashion week for AW11 is about to begin, the SS11 collections are yet to hit stores, but instead of thinking ahead to next winter (already!) I'm still enjoying the anticipation of spring and all that it will bring. Singing birds, leaves rustling on trees, the sea breeze blowing salty air beneath my nose, the scent of a rose garden... and of course, the new trends.
I'm a sucker for new trends. Some I love, some I hate. My favourites of the SS11 trends are bright, bold colours (Jil Sander, Giambattista Valli), prints (Prada, House of Holland), and the 70s revival (Marc Jacobs, YSL, Louis Vuitton). However, my first spring purchase will be a crisp white shirt. One of the must-have pieces for spring, the white shirt was seen in collections by Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney. Not only bang on trend, the white shirt is a keeper for your closet.
The white shirt will work brilliantly beneath a slim trouser suit; the white shirt can be teamed with a bright colour for simple but fun elegance (don't team black with colour, it cheapens the look); the white shirt will let you tap into any trend while saving you from fashion victim status.
I have the perfect white shirt in mind. Long sleeves, sharp collar, slightly utilitarian. Once I find it, I will wear it tucked it into my high waist 70s inspired trousers, elevated by cork wedges. Or with my navy tennis skirt, held together with a tan belt and tan gladiator platforms. I'll wear the white shirt with my cobalt blue pencil skirt, accented by gold jewellery and golden skin. Basically, I'll wear it with everything, and anything. The white shirt is not only a major trend this season, but it's a classic. Who can forget Carrie Bradshaw returning home in Big's shirt, belted, with nothing but her shoes from the night before? Now, how many other pieces could you use so effectively with such little consideration?
My New Year's resolution was to stop spending on frivolous fashion. But, hey - this isn't just a trend, it's an investment for my wardrobe!
