DESIGN COMPETITION // TEXTILE FEDERATION - RIGHT ON!

The Brief - Textile Federation

Taking inspiration from the psychedelic art movement of the 60′s and 70′s and referencing artists such as Peter Max, Miguel Calatayud and Celia Birkwell, as well as the early music poster scene of the time, the aim of this project is to produce innovative print designs to be used in our S/S15 collections of womenswear and accessories, to be sold across some of the world’s largest fashion retailers including Topshop, Urban Outfitters and Asos.com and more.

6 winners will be selected, each receiving £500. Winners will consist of a range of digital and screen prints, both as repeats or placements. Screen prints must use no more than 6 colours and repeats should be seamless in all directions. If submissions appear to be repeats then we expect them to be so unless stated clearly in the design description.
Submission deadline is October 19, 2014.  Go here to learn more and to submit your designs.

FEATURE // RADHA DUMRA - FASHION DESIGNER

Fashion Designer Radha Dumra was born in London, UK and raised in India.  She relocated to London to attend the London College of Fashion where she graduated with a degree in Knitwear Design.  Her initial exposure to the fashion industry came from the family business that has been in the knitwear industry for 35 years.

Radha's passion for fashion and textile led to the inception of her London based knitwear label in 2011 "Radha Dumra".  Her designs represent the dual nature of the emerging subcontinent: contemporary and unapologetically edgy yet introspective and deeply rooted in the redefining of its ancient culture. The Radha Dumra label are currently stocked in boutiques in London, Japan, Israel, Australia, India and online fashion boutiques such as "Not Just A Label".  The brand has also been featured in Vogue UK and Harper's Bazaar.

Below are images from her collection - ECO A/W 14
Her Autumn/Winter 2014 collection invites you to awaken your inner eco warrior and take a ride back to the roots of the Earth with these eco chic, down to earth yet fashion forward sports luxe looks. Inspired by tropical nature and plants like monstera and palm fronds with details like laser cutting, perforations, cutouts, mesh panels and quilting...

    CUT IT OUT

Cut paper collages we’ve been seeing more and more of over the past few months. It’s a fantastic way to mix prints and show off your knowledge of other popular textile trends; think of it as the crazier version of the Block Party trend we highlighted last week. If this look is to over-the-top for your client base, simplify it by using prints with a smaller scale, and limiting the number of colors used in the overall design.

    DAISIES

Daisies, whether photographic, painted, digitally warped or presented atop an abstract texture, designers are finding fresh ways to serve up this classic vintage flower. For more examples of how runway designers are interpreting this trend, be sure to check out resort collections from Alice + Olivia and Nina Ricci in addition to the designers shown here.

    FOLK FAIRYTALE

Transitional print concept that spills over from Fall 2014, but with a lighter, more springlike color palette. One part floral, one part Ukrainian embroidery, with a dash of fairytale whimsy thrown in for good measure, these prints bring a fresh, bohemian take on a trend your Grandmother would likely adore. To keep things really authentic, make sure to include references to traditional embellishment techniques such as cross-stitch or beading.

TRENDS + EVENT // PREMIEREVISION - A/W 2015-16

PREMIEREVISION, the world's premier fabric show will be held on September 16-18, 2014 at the Parc d'Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte. To register online, go to PV's - Registration.  Here are some of the details of their digital online color trends.  To view the slide show,  go to  Autumn/Winter 2015-16 Forecast and for Colours.

Resolute and spontaneous, the fall winter 1516 season
soars ahead with a beautiful generosity.
A window open onto multiple and composite possibilities,
it is an invitation to multiply points of view,
to put into perspective,
to see and compose in volume and in colour.
With a fine and sharpened outlook on decoration,
it expresses an invigorating visual simplicity.
With a fierce, unleashed strength,
it calls for disrupted shapes, summoning the beauty of colliding fabrics.
A broad, wide-angle view,
embracing initial sketches and concrete realities,
with fabrics that anticipate clothing,
and promise powerful and bold volumes.

The fall winter 1516 colour range cultivates sophisticated pigmentations in 3 dimensions, explores the peaceful contrasts of moderate tones.

A range to be read in three ways, to embrace as a whole and dip freely into,
to read horizontally to spot singular trios,
to delight in vertically to explore three powerful lines.
Concise and energetic, a line of pale-intense contrasts, where warms and colds come together, where colour has a tangible vitality.

Cheerful and loquacious, a line of warm and opulent softness, where pink, yellow and red nuances murmur in unison, where cold gold lends resonance to a matt intensity.
Radiant and mysterious, a line of faint or acidic lights, where fertile neutrals are concentrated, where cold celestial and twilight blues flourish.
Colours that interact closely with shapes, revealing volumes, highlighting or contradicting cuts, and eliciting surprise through their unexpected placement.

DESIGN COMPETITION // FRONT ROW SOCIETY - STONE AGE

CREATIVE BRIEF

Submission Deadline: 30 September, 2014, 6pm CET
Voting Starts: 01 October, 2014, 6pm CET

Stone Age is held as the last period of the Ice Age, where the climate gradually becomes warmer and nature bursts with the last breath of frozen beauty. Mountain peaks are starting to reveal their rock surfaces and glacier streams are slowly formed, covered in a blanked of ice blue. For this month’s scarves design challenge we want you to explore all signs of existence buried under a deep freeze and reflecting the natural evolution of time.

Concentrate on naturally occurring patterns; fossils and organic materials like rock and stone. Take a closer look in to the frozen natural landscape mottled with a muted, dewy shine where color glistens in a watery, wintry light. Think of volcanic grey and winter white perfectly combined into a raw and rugged Arctic camouflage.

This competition is for scarves. As always, don’t forget that your print might need to be adjusted to fit the appropriate template. All templates are marked with design specifications to help you get your design just right. Please note that all Front Row Society templates may differ slightly from final manufacturing specifications, so make sure your print is versatile and flexible enough for production.

What can you win?

Each winner receives a one-off immediate prize of 200€ . plus one of their products when it arrives in stock. But that is not all - each & every time we sell 500 pieces of your design, you will receive an additional €200. This means that FRS can continue to embody the spirit of fashion democracy, rewarding our top designs again...and again...and again! We will also conduct an interview with the winner, publicizing their design across the fashion community in Berlin and worldwide.

A soft, barely-there shade of Quartz Gray has been highlighted as a key neutral for the new Spring/Summer season. Simple dresses look romantic with sheer fabrics at Fendi, while Alexander Wang's patent chunky sole shoes make a modern statement. Elsewhere, Christian Dior demonstrates a fresh update on a vintage look with satiny pleats on a midi skirt.

Image courtesy Trendstop: Roberto Cavalli, Parkchoonmoo, both Spring/Summer 2014, Anna Murray and Grace Winteringham from Patternity, Thakoon.

This color is ideal for Junior and Contemporary Market collections, lending a clean, chic dimension to apparel and accessories alike. Roberto Cavalli opts for ethnic elegance with a tasseled and beaded dress, as Parkchoonmoo mixes matte and shine on a pair of peep-toe booties. Thakoon's fluid tailored pants appeal with a luxe tactility.

     OYSTER PINK

This creamy nude pink resonates with a hint of 40's-style glamour, lending a feminine finish to products. Mulberry's tonal striped ensemble feels elegantly summery, while Christopher Kane adds interest to a simple, demure two-piece with foil trim cut-outs. Karen Walker's ladylike leather bag feels expressly chic.

Suitable for all Market levels, Oyster Pink is a versatile neutral that can be applied to a range of fabrications. Over at Miu Miu, supple leathers are shaped into striking knee-high lace-up boots.
