I can remember going to the old cinema in Dundee to see Disney’s, The Lion King, in 1994 when I was 12 years old. I can remember laughing at Simba as a lion cub, curiously wandering the plains of Africa with his slightly more timid friend, Nala. I remember crying soon into the movie as Scar’s deadly plot unfolded. I can remember being completely besotted with the unlikely friends Simba made, and with his budding romance. As the film went on, I also remember feeling so proud of little Simba, who had now fully grown into a strong, dignified lion who fought for what he believed in.
Even, now, almost twenty years later, I felt exactly the same emotions when watching the award winning theatre production at the Lyceum Theatre in London. (I took my Mum last year – read about it here). The show was magnificent – breathtaking in fact. The backdrops, scenery and props were incredible, so much so that it really felt that you were part of the story. The actors gave a stellar performance, while the costumes were creative and fun. Of course, the music was brilliant and the entire production was totally enjoyable.
Surely, everyone loves The Lion King? It’s a wonderful tale for families, friends, couples, kids and oldies too. Everyone loves Simba and his story, whether it is told through film or theatre. So, it is with great excitement that I bring to you, The Daydreamer readers, a very exciting giveaway. This Saturday (25th June), Disney is celebrating the premiere of The Lion King in Disney Digital 3D (released in October this year) by staging a very special performance of ‘Circle of Life’ at the Edinburgh International Film Festival before a screening of the movie in 3D – and The Daydreamer has a pair of tickets to give away!
The amazing Browne Lindiwe Mkhize (who plays baboon ‘Rafiki’ in the theatre production) will give a very special solo performance of ‘Circle of Life’, the song that, as well as being the first song in the film and show, embodies the central themes of enduring family and friendship throughout The Lion King. Following that, the film will be screened in 3D, and you, dear reader, can be in with a chance of winning two tickets!
There will also be some Disney fun to kick off the day as the lion cubs will be treated to face painting, Disney’s Streetmosphere performers, competitions and more. Disney fans simply can’t miss out on this family event, which will culminate with the first screening of the Pride of Disney, The Lion King, at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre on Saturday 25 June at 2 p.m. (If you don’t manage to get your paws on The Daydreamer’s giveaway tickets, they are also on sale now at www.edfilmfest.org.uk or via the box office on 0131 228 2688).
To win a pair of tickets, all you have to do is follow The Daydreamer and leave a comment on this post with your name and email address so that a random winner can be chosen before midnight on Wednesday 22nd June 2011.
